The 14th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards Presented by LACOSTE held at Beverly Hilton on Tuesday February 21, 2012 had components of cocktail party, formal dinner, comedy hour, and somber affair. Celebrating multiple persons and awarding twelve achievements in Costume Design, including the centennial of Western Costume Company; Tuesday evening was a night few will knowingly forget, unless under the influence of palatable, signature cocktails provided by return sponsor DISARONNO. In attendance was Michelle Lacoste flying in from France specifically for the event, Mary Rose (President of CDG), and surprise guest presenter Ken Wantanabe, bestowing Clint Eastwood & Deborah Hopper with their swizzle stick of a champion silver trophy; Costume Designer’s Guild Award: Distinguished Collaborator Honorees.
"I’m going to move this along, because you know; we’re here for about three hours,” jokes Host and Tracksuit star of Fox Network’s Glee, Jane Lynch. CDGA celebrated in spirit the collaboration between Directors and Designers, with heavy emphasis on the latter; “You are our tribe, our people,” states John Dun onstage with Lisa Padovani, of Boardwalk Empire, winner of Outstanding Period and Fantasy TV Series.
Honoree Kate Beckinsale, attending with Director Len Wisemen collected the LACOSTE Spotlight Award, demonstrating a theme held throughout the ceremony by affiliates and organization; that of gratitude. In a monochromatic off the shoulder Vivienne Westwood gown with insinuating pale ivory print, Beckinsale emphasized her luck, “Crazy! How did I get here receiving this award in front of such talented people?”
The job of great costume design is to beautifully enhance, yet never overpower the story. For Evening Black Tie awards ceremonies this season, attendees are accentuating with a particular story accent – such as a koala bear bow neck tie or liquid flame dinner jacket dressing up an otherwise traditional black and white tux. It was also about contemporary brands like Elizabeth & James dress, wore by Costume Designer Susan Chan, with work on three commercials making it to ballot in a pool of tremendously brilliant nominees.
